The Palace of Ibrahim Pasa (or Ibrahim Paşa Sarayi) is now the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art and exhibits one of the world’s best collections of Islamic artefacts. The collection, kept in dark rooms around a central garden courtyard, keeping the sun off the artefacts, prevents the museum having to use expensive technology to the do same job. The palace was originally completed in 1524 for Ibrahim Pasa; Suleyman the Magnificent’s newly appointed Grand Vizier. The proportions of the rooms and with it being built next to the Hippodrome give an idea of his prominent status and the later sultans would use its balconies to watch festivities taking place below. The main exhibits show Seljuk, Mamluk and Ottoman Turkish art and important Timurid and Persian works like the 16th century Persian miniatures.
