Today the castle is the symbol of Ankara, which guarded the city for many centuries and has a history as old as the city itself.  

The exact date of its construction is unknown but it’s believed to have been built by the Roman’s and repaired and expanded by the Seljuk’s, and it towers 110m above Bentdere (Hatip) Creek that flows around its base.  
The castle is in two parts, inner and outer, with more than 20 towers. The outer part heart-shaped walls enclose the old city of Ankara and the inner castle’s four levels are built using Ankara stone and stones taken from other structures. The inner castle has two large gates, the Outer Gate and the Castle Gate and the towers within measure between 14-16m high, and inside there are also several Ottoman style houses here that date back to the 17th century.
