Karaoglan - Bestepeler and Yumurtatepe Tumulus
The Bestepeler Tumulus was the first to be excavated in 1926 by Makridi and during construction works in the area in 1945 it was necessary to remove several tumulus. From two of these several clay jars and other tools were recovered dating from the Phrygian era and experts concluded these were the contemporaries of the Phrygian tombs at Gordion. They also realised at the time that the Phrygian’s buried their dead on level ground, then built a structure made of logs over the site and covered it with dirt making it into a small hill, and they were also buried with a number of gifts.
Yumurtatepe (Demetevler) Tumulus is on the left side of the road at the intersection of Ciftlik- Demetevler and was excavated by the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations during 1986 and 1987 when they identified it as belonging to the Early Bronze Age and in the single structure several earthenware vessels were recovered.
