Golf Tourism is contributing to the economy
According to International Association of Golf Tour Operators Turkish chairman of board, Mr Kurtulus Gulsen, Belek is becoming very popular with European golf tourists and Turkey will have 50 golf courses in a couple of years.
Currently, 61 million people around the world play golf, while 27 million of these people go on a holiday to play golf. Mr Gulsen stated that although Spain and Portugal has been two countries that were highly popular withgolf players, due to high prices and badly maintained golf courses, tourists started to prefer Turkey, especially Belek located in Antalya. Mr Gulsen points out that there is no other golf resort, which is only 25 km away from the airport, have 14 km long sandy beach, 47 five star hotels and 15 golf courses. In 2012, 600,000 tourists visited Belek to play golf. 55% of those travelling to Turkey to play golf are from Germany, 20% are from Scandinavian countries and 15% are from United Kingdom. Although Belek has famous golf courses designed by world famous golfers, these 15 golf courses are not enough to meet the demands of the tourists. Apart from Belek, there are 3 golf courses located in Istanbul and 1 golf course in Kusadasi. Further 6 golf courses will be opened in Manavgat and 7 golf courses will be operational in Alanya in 2013. With the support of Culture and Tourism Municipality, the number of golf courses will increase to 50 in a couple of years and they will mainly be located in Bodrum , Marmaris , Cappadocia , Gocek and Kusadasi . Mr Gulsen also stated that each golf course in Turkey makes an average of 3 million Euro profit each year, making a good contribution to the Turkish economy.
