Phaselis Ancient City

Phaselis Ancient City
Phaselis Ruins is located 58km off the Antalya - Finike road and can also be accessed by the ferry landing at Kemer 15km away. This eastern coastal city of Lycia was one of the important commercial cities during the Hellenistic era in the 6th century BC and became an Episcopal centre during Roman times. It was once composed of three ports having thick walls, some of which remain in good condition today, and as the western portside has parts under the sand it’s a good place to take a swim from. Most of the ruins in Phaselis date from the Roman era and these are the port castle walls, Zeus Temple, King Antonius Caravell road and the 20 rows of the theatre ruins.

The peninsula has a wonderful main street that starts at the south port and reaches the city gates and is believed to have been used as a stadium from time to time because of its width and short length; it was written that two important athletic competitions took place here.

In the agora are two temples, one for Athena Polias who was the main goddess of Phaselis and the other is for Heista and Hermes and had bronzes of Homer’s mythological hero Achilles with Athena. Other ruins include a church, houses for bishops, and aqueducts, all in the Roman style and in good condition.

Phaselis
has a museum where the excavated ancient works found have been housed, and there is also a fine sand beach in a shallow bay with an excellent promenade along with forests and the mountains.
