Termessos Ancient City

Termessos Ancient City
Termessos one of Turkey’s major attractions, 30km northwest of Antalya , these soaring mountain peaks, now protected within Güllük Dagi Mountain National Park, hold this ancient Pisidian city with views alone making the trip more than worthwhile.

Full exploration of the ancient site is fairly arduous and good footwear is recommended as it takes at least 20 minutes to climb before you see any of the interesting remains. The Kings Road, built in the 2nd century AD, is the main road up to the city.

The gymnasium and bath complex are the first buildings you see but these are far eclipsed by the theatre, possibly the most dramatically situated in all Turkey. With its mountain backdrop and deep gorge to the right, seating 4-5000 spectators remains in well preserved manner.  There is also an agora, mausoleum, temples, odeon and necropolis with many sarcophagi dating from the 1st to the 3rd centuries AD, along with the Tomb of Alcatus and its remarkable carvings.

Getting to Termessos

There is an hourly bus that takes you to the forest track that leads to the site and from there you take a taxi.
