Milas Carpet Making

Milas Carpet Making
Milas is one of the oldest of the Turkoment tribe settlements and this region, its customs, traditions and clothing have retained their original characteristics.

Types of Milas Carpets

Classical

Carpets that are made in Milas are unique to
the area and it all began in the 16th century when they started weaving prayer mats. Carpets made in the 18th and 19th centuries are known as classical (traditional) and use patterns and colours of a baroque style; the classical prayer mats use a “prayer niche” design of a equilateral rectangle with a pattern at the top of the niche that represents the peak of a minaret with the inner sides styled with plants, and has motifs without contours.

Ada Milas

The “Ada Milas” carpet is one of the oldest examples and has side patterns in lines next to each other and in each column the pattern is usually repeated.  Baroque style carpets were made during the reign of Sultan Abdulmecit, which was a time greatly influenced by European and Ottoman art and architecture, and have zig-zag lines as opposed to straight and flower patterns on the sides; the Ada Milas carpet actually took its name from a design of a bouquet of carnations.

Karacahisar

There is another type of Milas carpet that is square, rectangular or hexagonal in shape and has a design of medallions woven on it and were specifically woven in the village of Karacahisar.
During the 18th and 19th centuries the carpets were made using pure wool which was coloured with natural and root dyes and today carpets are still being produced not only in Karacahisar but Oren, Dorttepe, Gereme, Bozalan, Ikizkoy, Pinarkoy, Mezgit, Guregiz, Akcakaya and other regional villages.
