Rabbit or Tavsan Island Bodrum

Rabbit or Tavsan Island Bodrum
Rabbit Island is next to the village of Gumusluk in Bodrum , is separated by two beaches and accessed by a partially submerged causeway that was constructed by King Mausolus of Halicarnassos during the Hellenistic era to enable himself and his beloved wife Artemisa to visit the island to watch the unique and beautiful sunsets and to feed the rabbits that lived there.

Today it is still possible to wade across the knee deep water and to climb to the top of the island and view the wonderful surroundings.

Myndos City

The island is also home to the ancient Carian city of Myndos where during 4 years of excavation work revealed significant artefacts, along with monuments and churches.

Snorkelling at Rabbit Island

It is possible to swim in the crystal clear water here, and around Gumusluk, to view the submerged ruins that slid into the waters during an unrecorded earthquake.  The land and offshore areas are now protected from development, snorkelling here is allowed but scuba diving is prohibited.

As the original rabbit population disappeared from the island long ago they have been recently reintroduced.
