Cesme Archaeology Museum
The museum first opened to the public in 1965 as a gun museum displaying guns that had been brought from the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul , and in 1984 it had to change as the guns were deteriorating from oxidisation caused through humidity conditions at the museum and were moved to the Izmir Archaeology Museum and the Odemis Museum .
Artefacts were then brought to the museum from excavations that had been on-going since 1964 at the ancient site of Ildiri ( Erythrai ) which included sculptures of gods and goddesses, baked earthenware, busts, marble items, coins, frames and amphora.
Today the ruins at Ildırı can be visited free of charge and include city walls, acropolis, amphitheatre, villa buildings, a Temple of Athena and a Byzantine church.
