Erythrai Ancient City Cesme

Erythrai Ancient City Cesme
Erythrai, situated 27km north of Cesme in the village of Ildiri, was one of the 12 Ion cities in the 7th century BC.

History of Erythrai

While Erythrai was a small city compared to other Ion cities, it was famous for producing millstone, wine and timber. The city used to trade with Egypt, Cyprus and western countries.

Erythrai became independent in 334 BC when Alexander the Great concurred Anatolia, however it lost its importance in the Roman and Byzantine times. In 1333, Turks changed the name of the town to Ildiri.

Erythrai Ruins

Today, you can view the theatre and couple of houses, however the site is not well presented as some of the other historical sites such as Ephesus ancient city. During the excavations, the statues found are currently being exhibited at the Izmir Archeology Museum .
