It was once a renowned Hellenic oracle centre (second to that of Delphi) and is mentioned in a hymn written by Homer dedicated to Apollo. The nearby sacred natural spring is where Leto is believed to have given birth to the twins, Artemis and Apollo, who were the sons of Zeus.
The road leading from here to the harbour was once lined with ancient statues that were taken in 1858 and put on display at the British Museum in London. Yenihisar’s resort area is 1km from Didim itself and sits and in a large unspoilt and quiet region and has several basic B&B’s, hotels and restaurants that are considerably cheaper than can be found in the nearby Altinkum Beach area and resort of Didim.
