Ancient Cities of Lycian Civilisation

Ancient Cities of Lycian Civilisation

The ancient region of Lycia lies on the Teke Peninsula in the Mediterranean region of Turkey surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the south, Caria on the west and Pamphylia on the east, and is famous for the many remains found that date from 4th and 5th centuries BC belonging to the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

The written Egyptian and Hittite sources here date back to the 2nd millennium BC and mention a tribe called “Luka or Lukka”, and that the Hittite king Suppilulluma conquered the “Lycia Country” in the 14th century BC.
There are also written sources referring to the Kadesh Battle calling the people “Lukkies the sea people” and according to historians “Lukka” means “Land of the Light”. The Syrian king Antiochus III ruled Lycia from the end of the 1st up to the mid-2nd century BC, and in the 1st century BC the “Lycian League” was founded and comprised of 23 cities. This was the first known union of a democratic federation in history (which inspired modern democratic systems) whereby the principle cities had 3 votes and others 2 or 1 depending on their size.

Ancient Cities of Lycian Federation

The main cities of the federation were the capital city Patara , then Xanthos , Pinara , Olympos , Myra and Tlos and were later joined by Phaselis . The other cities of the League are known from inscriptions on coins found in excavations and are Andriake , Sura , Kyaenai , Limyra , Theimmusa , Simena , Istlada , Trebende and Aperiae.
