Fethiye Museum

Fethiye Museum
The idea for Fethiye Museum first arose in the 1960s to house the large ancient works of art (opuses) that were being gathered from the Fethiye area and needed to be protected. This contemporary museum was constructed in 1987 and consists of two halls, one for Archaeology and the other for Ethnography, and all of these opuses have come from Fethiye or nearby.

Artefacts

Most of them are ceramic and have been placed in a chronological order ranging from 3,000 BC to the end of the Byzantine era. The most important is the stela that helped in decoding and translating the Likian language and has text written in three different languages.
Another significant opus is the “Sculpture of Young Girl with Dove” which relates to the Arthemis cult and confirms the existence of an Arthemis temple in the city during ancient times.

In the Ethnography Hall there are examples of hand weaving and embroidery, robes, üç etek (a certain type of dress for women), silver jewellery specific to the region and a working dastar loom.
Outside, there are large stone blocked opuses, sarcophagus graves and the “Izraza Monument” which is a part of the Lichean culture.
