Gemiler or St Nicholas Island
People used to live in this island during the Byzantine period (at the time the island was called Aya Nikola), and it is believed that St Nicholas or Santa Claus lived in Gemiler Island for a period of time.
The island has many ruins of churches, houses, roads covered with mosaics and 1500m tunnel linking the two churches on the island. The churches are from the 5th and 11th century and the exterior walls are still surviving. Some of the ruins are now located 2 meters underwater allowing visitors to sightsee while swimming. St Nicholas Island is 1st degree Protected Land so construction is not permitted.
