Pinara Archaic City Fethiye
LocationThis is located 45km from Fethiye and close to the village of Minare or Minaret and it is said that when Xanthos became over populated the people left and established Pinara City on a round hill at the base of Kragos Mountain (Pinara or Pinale translates to “round” in the Lycian language). Today the local people will not only point out the road to take to the ruins but may well take you there by tractor.
Ruins at PinaraFacing south of Cinarli Stream are numerous Lycian style tombs, the largest and most significant of which depicts a city in its carved relief and is believed to have been a tomb of a king, consequently the route to the tombs is known as the “Kings Tombs” and has fantastic views.
The Odeon and theatre were built on the northeast side of the settlement just outside of the town and have managed to remain almost intact but as this area is so overgrown these can be difficult to reach.
On the high hills of the west side the tombs, believed to be the oldest of the Lycian tombs, are known as “Doves Nest” and little is known on how they managed to construct them on these rocky slopes. Other ruins you can see are sarcophagus graves, city walls, baths and an agora.
