Sovalye Island Fethiye
This small sleepy island sits across from the port of Fethiye and takes just 15 minutes to reach by water taxi. The whole island is pedestrian only with no motor vehicles or roads and has wonderful shaded walking trails leading through lovely pine scented forests. It is possible to walk from one end to the other in around 45 minutes taking you along a shoreline of sand and shingle bays. There are Roman ruins visible in the crystal clear blue water and hidden among the carob and pine trees further inland are the ruins of a castle built during the crusades of the Knights of St. John whilst they crossed from the island of Rhodes nearby; there is a legend that tells during the Middle Ages deserting knights used Sovalye as base when they turned coat and became pirates.
Places to Visit
Things to doVisitors can paddle a canoe around the island in about an hour or even swim around in two hours and are able to view the submerged houses, city wall, churches and Roman cistern, along with old pots and amphora that are strewn across the seabed.
