Tlos Ruins

Tlos Ruins
Tlos is one of the most ancient of the Lycian cities, situated beside the village of Asarkale (35 km away from Fethiye center) and once referred to in the 14th century BC as “Dalawa in the Lukka lands”. A bronze hatchet discovered there dates from the second millennium BC confirming its long heritage of the place.

The site contains the main necropolis with a few sarcophagi and a complex of rock cut house tombs. The best of the graves is the Tomb of Bellerophon on the northern base of the hill. There are baths, three complete chambers, one with an apsidal projection and named by locals as Yedi Kapı (Seven Gates) due to its seven intact windows giving views of the Xanthos valley. There is also a Byzantine basilica and a magnificent 2nd century BC theatre with 34 seats still remaining.

There are simple cafés here offering snacks and several trout restaurants 3km onward uphill to the village of Yaka, one of which was a former watermill.  2km from the ruins entrance is a mountain lodge offering accommodation.
