Aga Mosque Taksim Istanbul

Aga Mosque Taksim Istanbul

Location

This is the only mosque on Istiklal Road (Caddesi) and the closest to Taksim Square .

History

It was built in 1594 for Huseyin Aga, who was the local governor, at the same time as the Galatasaray Hamam , and rebuilt in 1934 after a fire. In the rear of the courtyard there is an exceptional fountain that came from a disused dervish lodge.

Citè de Roumelie or Agora Romelias

Near to the mosque is the Citè de Roumelie/Agora Romelias,
an apartment block that has very ornate carvings and inscriptions written in French, Greek and Ottoman that are reminiscent of this once multinational area. The block was built over what was a shopping arcade, which was once one of three hans that were dedicated to the European, African and Anatolian continents and the Afrika Han can still be seen on Buyuk Parmakkapi Sokak. These hans were paid for by Ragip Paşa (1857-1920) who was a bureaucrat during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II who also built for himself a very fine house in Caddebostan .
