Ataturk Olympic Stadium Istanbul

Ataturk Olympic Stadium Istanbul
Ataturk Olympic Stadium is located in the neighbourhood of Ikitelli on the western borders of Istanbul and is Turkey’s largest capacity stadium and named after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who was the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey.

Construction of the stadium began in 1999 on an
area of 584 hectares and took 3 years to complete and the reason it was built was for Turkey’s bid into the 2008 Olympic Games which unfortunately failed and was awarded to Beijing.   Ataturk Olympic Stadium cost US$140 million to build, it has a 76,092 seating capacity and in 2004 was awarded a title of a 5-star sports complex by the UEFA which enabled the stadium to host UEFA events and finals and hosted the UEFA 2005 Champions League Final between Liverpool FC and AC Milan.

Ataturk Olympic Stadium has also been awarded certificates from the IAAF and IOC as a first class athletics venue and has played host to various European competitions and utilised by various national football teams, particularly the popular team Galatasaray SK, who in 2003/4 played at the stadium while their own was undergoing renovations.   Ataturk Olympic Stadium also has an amphitheatre, hosts educational activities along with cultural and social events.
