Ayakapi Istanbul

Ayakapi Istanbul
Along the busy road between Fener and the Golden Horn there are still traces of the old sea walls, although they are in sorry state of disrepair from being battered by the Crusaders in 1204 and again by the Ottomans in 1453. There are several gateways through the wall that survive today including Ayakapi which was built in 1582 by the famous architect Mimar Sinan .

Next to it is a wooden chapel (mescit) built over the tomb of Sekbanbaşı Abdurrahman Ağa who died in the 1453 conquest of Istanbul , and beside it is a building that was once the base of the Janissaries and after being disbanded by Sultan Mahmud II in 1826 it became a police station.

Today it is a small café where you can just about see the top of the dome of the Church of St. Nicholas sticking out from the top of its walls.
