Baklahorani Carnival in Kurtulus Sisli
When and where does the Baklahorani Carnival takes place? This carnival would begin in old Tatavla on the Monday before the start of Lent, which in the Greek tradition is known as “Clean Monday” and held in front of the churches and the Haghios Elefherios cemetery.
Traditions of the CarnivalPeople celebrating would drink alcohol and eat beans, which were usually feasted on the day before a fast began.
One of the strangest events during the carnival was the “procession of the Amazons” where prostitutes from all over Istanbul would ride on horses dressed in velvet parading through the streets. This is perhaps why the carnival gained its distasteful reputation, and the last one was held in 1943 which attracted only 20 customers.
The carnival is slowly being revived today although probably not as evocative as it once was.
