Baltalimani Istanbul

Baltalimani Istanbul
The suburb of Baltalimani is just passed the Fatih Sultan Mehmed Bridge and was named after Admiral Baltaoglu Suleyman Bey, the man who  built the boats that Fatih Mehmed used in the battle of Constantinople. Because of the huge amount of trees the Admiral had chopped down to build the boats he acquired the nickname “Balta” which means axe in Turkish.

Palace of Mediha Sultan

The most significant building here is what was once the pink painted Palace of Mediha Sultan
that today is an orthopaedic hospital. Sarkis Balyan designed it in the mid 19th century for Mustafa Reşid Paşa, the six times Grand Vizier to Sultan Abdulmecid , and who initiated the Tanzimat reform movement. Galip Pasa, son in law of Abdülmecid and married to his daughter Fatma Sultan, was next to own the building after which Damat Ferit Pasa took over and renamed it after his wife. In 1838 the Trade Treaty between the Ottomans and British was signed here which went on to improve restrictions on foreign traders and created economic growth.
