Bankalar or Voyvoda Road Istanbul

Bankalar or Voyvoda Road Istanbul
In the 19th century this was one of Istanbul’s most important streets as many banks and insurance companies established their head offices here and is why it gained the nickname Bankalar (Banks).  The street is at the junction of the Minerva Han and Yüksek Kaldırım Road in Karakoy .

The restored Minerva Han has a lovely blue tiled façade decorated with cherubs and dates back to around 1912 and is thought to be the design of architect Basile Couremons.  Bankalar Street resembles those found in the City of London, England with imposing buildings on both sides and particularly the Assicurazioni Genrali Han designed in 1909 by Giulio Mongeri, and the Hezaren Han designed by Alexandre Vallaury in 1902, who also designed the Ottoman Bank that today houses the Ottoman Bank Museum.

Most banks moved their headquarters to Ankara after the Turkish Republic was established in 1923 and the main banking districts today are Levent and Maslak .
