Barbados Square Istanbul

Barbados Square Istanbul
The square is home to the statue of Barbados Hayreddin (1478-1546) who was an infamous pirate that went on to become an admiral known to Europeans as Barbarossa (Redbeard), and he established the Ottoman control of the mediterranean that lasted until 1571. Not only did he take charge of the Ottoman navy he also governed Algeria and parts of Greece. Barbarossa wrote a memoir detailing his numerous campaigns which became the source of a novel written by M. Ertugrul Duzdag called “The mediterranean Was Ours”. Opposite is his octagonal two-storey tomb designed by Mimar Sinan in 1541.
