Boyacikoy Istanbul

Boyacikoy Istanbul

Location

This beautiful suburb sits between Emirgan and Balatlimani .

History

Boyacikoy was named in the 18th century when a large family of dyers resettled here from Kirklareli in Thrace.  Sultan Selim III brought them here to prepare the fez hats that were required to be worn by men and needed in the city.

Places to Visit in Boyacikoy

Armenian Church of Surp Yerits Mangants

In the quaint backstreets is the small Armenian Church of Surp Yerits Mangants (The Three Holy Infants) that was built on a sacred spring (ayazma) and dates from 1836.  It was completely restored in 1885 and again in 2004, although at that time the congregation only totalled 10 families.

Church of Panagia Evangelistria

The Greek Orthodox Church of Panagia Evangelistria (St. Mary) is on Fırın Street and dates back to 1834, and just around the corner on Tebdil Eskisi Street there is a lovely double fronted schoolhouse that dates from 1905.
