Byzantine Sea Walls of Istanbul

Byzantine Sea Walls of Istanbul
These Byzantine sea walls can be found on Kennedy Road by the shoreline and once stretched from the Marble Tower (Mermer Kule) in the west to Ayvansaray in the north.  The walk along the coast road here is very pleasant and it takes around half hour from Ahirkapi or Catladikapi to Sarayburnu .

As you walk you will spot among the stonework a couple of landmarks.  The first is the support wall, which is all that remains of the Pearl Pavilion (Incili Köşk)
that was built into the border of Topkapi Palace and has a story that tells of Sultan Murad III, who at the end of his life, was looking out to the sea from his pavilion listening to music when a passing naval ship fired their guns in his honour which caused such vibration part of the ceiling fell on him.  This pavilion was also where a famous organ was housed that had been sent as a gift by England’s Queen Elizabeth I to Sultan Mehmed III.
The 12th century Church of Saviour Philanthropos (Jesus the Charitable) was just along from the pavilion and all that remains today are the shapes of the windows within the brickwork.  This church was very popular with medieval Russian pilgrims who believed that a statue there had worked miracles and up to the mid 19th century the sacred spring (ayazma) there was visited by Greek pilgrims.
