Cankurtaran, means “life saver” and is believed to have been named after a life boat station that was once there or possibly it was given in memory of a soldier named Ni’me’l-CeyĹź’ten Seyyid Hasan AÄźa whose was nicknamed “the Life-Saver” due to his bravery in a battle against the Byzantines.

Things to do in CankurtaranThings we recommend to do while in Cankurtaran ; visit the HÄ±drellez Festival (www.hidrellez.org) held every 5-6 May in Ahirkapi Park on the waterfront. This Balkan gypsy festival is to celebrate the coming of spring where people eat and drink, listen to music, jump over bonfires and attach their wishes to special “wishing trees or nahils”. Or, why not try your hand at some Turkish cooking at the “Cooking Alaturka” (www.cookingalaturka.com) where you are taught how to cook and also get to sample the local produce in the attached restaurant.
Getting to CankurtaranUse the Cankurtaran station which runs on the old train system (banliyö) and clatters along from Sirkeci or take a short walk downhill from Sultanahmet .
