Cankurtaran Istanbul

Cankurtaran Istanbul
Cankurtaran’s back streets lie between the walls of Topkapi Palace and Kumkapi standing on the site of the remains of the old Byzantine Great Palace , pieces of which are still surprisingly found today, and is also home to the Dede Efendi Museum .

Cankurtaran, means “life saver” and is believed to have been named after a life boat station that was once there or possibly it was given in memory of a soldier named Ni’me’l-CeyĹź’ten Seyyid Hasan AÄźa whose was nicknamed “the Life-Saver” due to his bravery in a battle against the Byzantines.
Barbarossa, the 16th century Ottoman admiral had barracks built here for his sailors for when they returned from a voyage.  A fire destroyed the original buildings in the 18th century and the Armada Hotel now stands in their place.  The area is becoming increasingly touristic with many hotels being built but it still offers a traditional Istanbul neighbourhood and has many old wooden houses, some in a very bad state, and lots of small shops that cater to the locals.

Places to Visit in Cankurtaran

Some of the sites that you can visit in Cankurtaran are: Haseki Hurrem Sultan Hamam , Ahirkapi , Propontine Sea Walls , Dede Efendi Museum , Ishak Pasa Mosque and Akbiyik Street .

Things to do in Cankurtaran

Things we recommend to do while in Cankurtaran ; visit the Hıdrellez Festival (www.hidrellez.org) held every 5-6 May in Ahirkapi Park on the waterfront.  This Balkan gypsy festival is to celebrate the coming of spring where people eat and drink, listen to music, jump over bonfires and attach their wishes to special “wishing trees or nahils”.  Or, why not try your hand at some Turkish cooking at the “Cooking Alaturka” (www.cookingalaturka.com) where you are taught how to cook and also get to sample the local produce in the attached restaurant.

Getting to Cankurtaran

Use the Cankurtaran station which runs on the old train system (banliyö) and clatters along from Sirkeci or take a short walk downhill from Sultanahmet .
