Casa Botter Building on Istiklal Road Istanbul
This rather shabby but beautiful 19th century building on Istiklal Caddesi (Road), and one of the best on the street, was designed in the Art Nouveau style by Raimondo d’Aronco in 1901. A Dutch tailor, Jan Botter, who was a couturier to Sultan Abdulhamid II, commissioned the works. The exterior is decorated with stone roses and large female heads and has ornate wrought-iron balconies, and the interior has stained glass, unfortunately now broken, with an elaborate elevator shaft and banister railings. It is sad that no attempt has been made to restore the building.
