Cemberlitas Istanbul

Cemberlitas Istanbul
The district of Çemberlitaş ( Hooped Column ) takes its name from the hooped stone column that was erected during the reign of Constantine the Great and is in the square opposite the Cemberlitas Hamam . This rather drab square was once the very attractive Forum of Constantine, shaped in an oval and having many porticoes, statues of Roman emperors, pagan gods, Christian saints and was surrounded by grand mansions and temples.

Residents of Cemberlitas

Çemberlitaş was a very popular residential area in the 19th century for doctors and lawyers and when the area became unfashionable in the early 20th century, as the old residents left, eastern Turkish immigrants quickly moved in, particularly leather workers who took advantage of decreasing rents. At the time this greatly affected the hamam as it no longer had wealthy visitors’ to help maintain its upkeep.
