Ceremonial Hall in Dolmabahce Palace
The tour of   Dolmabahce Palace ends in the most spectacular room of the whole palace, the amazing Ceremonial (Muayede) Hall that is in the very centre dividing the selamlik from the Harem and stands 36m high and it topped with a dome that is invisible from the outside. It is supported by 56 columns and purports to have the largest throne room in the world. The huge room has a silk Hereke carpet that covers 124 square metres, a Bohemian crystal chandelier that weights 4.5 tons, requires 664 light-bulbs, it was a gift from Queen Victoria of Great Britain and took 3 months to install.


A form of central heating could be piped up the columns and took 3 days before it would come into effect. The most important imperial ceremonies would be held here and the sultan’s exquisite 250kg throne would be brought from the Topkapi Palace treasury and placed against the west wall. Ambassadors would line up in the gallery facing the throne, with other guests to the left, and the orchestra to the right. The area above the sultan would remain empty as no one but Allah could be placed above him.

Important events that took place here include the 1876 coronation of Sultan Murad V, an event that would usually take place at Topkapi Palace ; the first meeting of the Ottoman parliament in 1877 from which seeds were sown to end the reign of the Empire and later, Ataturk ’s first speech as the President of the Republic of Turkey , a copy of which is displayed in the room.
