Church of Constantine Lips or Fenari Isa Mosque

Church of Constantine Lips or Fenari Isa Mosque
The church gets its strange name from an actual person called Constantine Lips who worked in the courts of Emperor Leo the Wise (886-912) and Constantine Porphyrogenitus (913-959).

Design of Church of Constantine Lips

The church was built with five apses on Vatan Road or Caddesi and has stood there since 907, and it was originally part of a mosque complex. The church is unusually built with four chapels on the roof clustered inside the dome and Lips
had the church dedicated to Theotokos Panachrantos, the Immaculate Mother of God. Later, the Church of St. John the Baptist was adjoined to it and founded by Theodora, the wife of Michael VIII Palaeologus (1259-1282). This church had three apses one of which was taken from the older church and together both churches possessed an astonishing seven apses, six of which remain today.

Converting Fenari Isa Mosque to Dervish Lodge

Fenari Ali Efendi converted the church into a dervish lodge in the 15th century and it was later used by Sheikh Isa, an eminent preacher, and from both names the compound takes its name.

Nearby, and behind a stone schoolhouse, is the tomb of Sah Huban Kadin a daughter of Selim I who died in 1572 and is another of Sinan’s works.
