Church of Hagios Demetrios Kanabu

Church of Hagios Demetrios Kanabu
On the main road that follows the sea walls you will see a plaque commemorating the start of the siege of Constantinople on 23 April 1453 and just after it the roof of the Church Hagios Demetrios Kanabu becomes visible.  It is known that a church has been on this site since the 4th century and from 1597 to 1601 it was home to the patriarchate, although today’s building only dates back to 1730.

Nearby at the junction of Kırkambar Roadand Mahkeme Altı Road is the Church of Panagia Balinu, which is known to date from 1597, although the current building dates from either 18th or 19th century.
