Church of Hagios Georgios Metochi

Church of Hagios Georgios Metochi
The building you see today pre-dates an 18th century fire, and in the 12th century the church was originally a chapel for the Governor of Wallachia.   It was sold in the 17th century and served as a “metochoin” or daughter-church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.    Although the church itself is architecturally uninteresting, inside it has a 10th century edition of the seven works of the brilliant Greek mathematician Archimedes that includes; “The Method”, The Stomachion” and “On Floating Bodies”.  These managed to survive because the parchment they had been written on was re-used to create a prayer book.

Archimedes Palimpsest is believed to have been made in Constantinople which was rediscovered in 1906 when a study of it was made by John Ludwig Heiberg and is now housed in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, USA.
