Armenian Surp Hac

These include the Armenian Surp Hac (Holy Cross) on Kirbac Street, designed by Garabet Balyan in 1881, is a brick and stone rectangular structure that sits on the site of a much earlier building.

Church of Hagios Demetrios

At the end of the same road and up some steps is the Church of Hagios Demetrios (St. Demetrius) that dates
from 1798 and is particularly interesting as it was from here the controversial theological school that is now on Heybeliada started in 1804.  On enrolling to the priesthood the trainees would stand on a symbol of a two-headed eagle that was inlaid in the ground at the entrance and take their vows to observe the teachings of the church.  There is tunnel at the back that stretches uphill to the Hagious Soitros ayazma (sacred spring) and where its source comes from a cave over 40 metres away. Water that has constantly dripped for over a hundred years has calcified on the walls that now resemble the inside of a cave and are a fascinating sight.

Church of Ioannes Prodromos

The wooden turret of the small Church of Ioannes Prodromos (John the Baptist) is just visible from behind the high walls at where they meet on Kurucesme - Arnavutkoy Road.
