Cihangir Istanbul

Cihangir Istanbul
Cihangir is actually named after a son of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent and is one of the most upmarket places to live in Istanbul. It is close to the many different attractions that are on Istiklal Road (Caddesi) and its main street, Siraselviler Road (Caddesi), links Taksim Square with Tophane and has the Firuz Aga Mosque nearby.

Cihangir is where many expats made their home which generated foreign food being offered in the street cafés and restaurants there and where you will hear all sorts of languages being spoken.

Places to Visit in Cihangir

Taksim Sahnesi or Maksim Music Hall

Siraselviler Caddesi (Row of Cypresses Street) leads towards the Bosphorus from Taksim Square and on route you will pass Taksim Sahnesi, a building designed by Giulio Mongeri (1875-1953), that was once the Maksim Music Hall and also Istanbul’s first cinema, Majik.

Romanian Consulate

Further along the street and inside a 19th century mansion is the Romanian Consulate that once belonged to the London envoy to the Ottoman court, and the very impressive building of the Belgian Consulate that was designed by Kampanaki, the Greek architect.

There was once many other buildings as equally impressive along here that unfortunately all fell prey to modern development.
