Cubuklu Istanbul

Cubuklu Istanbul
As the word Çubuklu has different meanings in Turkish, there are a couple of stories on how this suburb came by its name; it may have referred to “çubuk” which is the stem of a clay pipe that were made here in the 19th century, it is also the name of a Cornelian cherry tree that Sultan Selim I planted when he was a crown prince visiting here and the sapling is said to have miraculously matured and produced fruit overnight.

Places to Visit

Cubuklu Yalis

Close to the Çubuklu ferry landing stage is the neo-classical Halil Edhem Yalı or Mansion House that was built in the late 19th century for Edham Ibrahim Paşa, who was Grand Vizier to Sultan Abdülhamid II and father of Osman Hamdi Bey. This is one of the few yalıs to have retained its original architecture and was fully restored in 1988.

Hidiv Kasri

While you are in Cubuklu, you should definately visit the Khedive’s Villa or Hidiv Kasri as it is one of the most stunning buildings in Istanbul .

Getting to Cubuklu and the Khedive's Villa

From the waterfront at Uskudar take the Bus No. 15 to Kanlica and walk uphill from there following the signposts to the villa which will take about 20 minutes.
