District of Carsamba Istanbul

District of Carsamba Istanbul
The Carsamba area is between Fatih and the shoreline of the Golden Horn and has an even more religious community than Fatih. Many of the women here wear black chador’s that only show a small part of their face and their men wear loose shirts over baggy trousers and have thick bushy beards. They are devotees of the Nakshibendi Tarikat (Sect) that centres on the Ismail Aga Mosque and rarely has outside visitors.
Carsamba (Wednesday) which was called Deutron in the Byzantine era has a couple of contradictory stories on how it got its name; the first is, after the Ottoman conquest in 1453 Sultan Mehmed II brought people to settle here from the district of Çarşamba on the Black Sea and the second is, it took its name from the market that is still held here every Wednesday.
