Dutch and Italian Consulates on Istiklal Road

Dutch and Italian Consulates on Istiklal Road

The Dutch Consulate

The Dutch Consulate, which stands behind iron gates, was built in 1855 by Gaspare and Guiseppe Fossati; the Swiss architects who also helped restore Hagia Sophia .  There is a steep street that runs down beside Tom Tom Kaptan Street and is where the Dutch Chapel is and was the first Protestant place of worship in Istanbul .
Near to the Dutch Embassy at  Istiklal Road No: 201 there is a large shop housed in a 1920s Art Nouveau building with an interior of sparkling glass and wood and certainly worth a visit even if you are not buying anything.

Palazzo de Venezia and Italian Embassy

Further along in extensive grounds is the very impressive mansion
Palazzo de Venezia that was built in 1782 to house the Venetian Embassy back when Italians governed this area.  The infamous Casanova came and stayed there for three months in 1744 and when the Venetian Republic ceased to exist in 1797 the palace was taken over by the Austrians, then the French, the Austrians again and finally in 1919 became the Italian Embassy, which changed to a consulate when the Embassy was moved to Ankara.
