Edirnekapi and Karagumruk Districts Istanbul

Edirnekapi and Karagumruk Districts Istanbul
The Edirnekapi area is close to the gateway set in the Theodosian land walls from where the road ran to Edirne in Thrace, a city of great importance during the Ottoman era. Inside the walls is Edirnekapi’s most famous monument, the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque , and also a 5th century open cistern and a lodge (tekke) where whirling dervishes study their art.
On the east side is Karagumruk (Land Customs) and is thought to have gained its name from either Sultan Mehmed II granting permission for customs taxes to be collected from a local boiler-stoker named Kara Davud or simply because this was where goods arrived into the city via land (kara) and where taxes were imposed.
