Esma Sultan Fountain Istanbul

Esma Sultan Fountain Istanbul
The Esma Sultan Fountain with its namazgâh (an open-air prayer terrace constructed for the use of travellers on caravan routes and visitors from outside of the city) was built in Kadirga Square in 1781 by Esma Sultan, a daughter of Sultan Ahmet III (1673-1736).

It has four water faucets with marble basins underneath on each side of the fountain. The namazgâh platform was constructed on top of the fountain itself which indicates the importance of cleanliness in Islamic culture and is accessible by a marble staircase on its northern side.

The faucets fitted on opposite sides of the fountain have rectangular parallelepiped blocks and are decorated with ‘S’ and ‘C’ curves which add an artistic aesthetic look to the fountain. Decorated niche pendentives (supports for the dome) have a rectangular panel board on which there is an inscription of six verses that include the construction date and forms the surface of the board. There are two basins placed on supports which are built in a reverse bell-shaped style on both the northern and western corners of the fountain. There is also a watering hole with three divisions on the southern corner.
