Fildami or Elephants’ Stables Bakirkoy
This is one of the four 5th century open-air cisterns or reservoirs that were built in Istanbul and architecturally this is the most impressive.

The cistern is in Bakirkoy close to the race-course at Veliefendi Hippodrome (the other three are within the Theodosian Land Walls) and played a part in the city’s westward expansion; unlike its counterparts it had a control tower placed in one corner.

It is believed the water from here supplied Valen’s Palace and possibly connected to other aqueducts supplying the city’s water system. Its name derives from its huge size, 127 metres x 76 metres and today houses a rather unkempt football pitch.
