First National Architecture in Istanbul

First National Architecture in Istanbul
This style of architecture comes from the first half of the 20th century and was given the name First National Architecture.  The design was made merging elements of Seljuk and Ottoman styles to create something new and original.  It has features of overhanging roofs, semi-circular ornaments that jut out, thick lancet windows and tiled panels on the façades.

The two main architects of this time were Vedat Tek (1873-1942) and Kemaleddin Bey (1870-1927) whose face now adorns the 20 Turkish Lira note.  Their designs include the Main Post Office , the Land Registry and Rectorate buildings in the Hippodrome, the Four Seasons Hotel in Sultanahmet and the Sutluce Convention Centre.
