Galata Mevlevihanesi of Whirling Dervishes

Galata Mevlevihanesi of Whirling Dervishes
At the top of Galip Dede Road and around the corner of Tunel station you will find this functioning dervish lodge, one of the few remaining in Istanbul , where visitors can watch performances of the whirling dervishes .
The lodge dates from 1492 and is housed inside an 18th century complex and has a cemetery filled with delicately carved Ottoman headstones including one honouring Galip Dede, who was a Sufi poet in the 17th century.  The dervishes perform several times a month inside a wooden floored semahane (ritual hall) with seats arranged around it and has a gallery above.
Here you will see female dervishes spinning alongside the men, which is very unusual, and who dress in very colourful robes unlike the males who only wear white.
There are glass showcases placed around the arena that displays a collection of the Museum of Court Literature that includes excellent old manuscripts and some musical instruments.
