Gebze Istanbul

Gebze Istanbul
If you take the long slow train ride from Haydarpasa station, Gebze is the very last stop you come to and is famous for the magnificent Coban Mustafa Pasa Mosque and its complex of buildings.

Carthaginian General Hannibal

It is also noted in Tunisian history for the famous Carthaginian General Hannibal, the man that crossed the Alps with the elephants, as he died and was buried here. Hannibal (248-183 BC) is remembered for the role he
played against the Romans in the Second Punic War when he led an army of war elephants around the mediterranean from what is now Tunisia and confronted the Romans in their homeland of Italy in 218 BC. He went on to retire at Libyssa (Diliskelesi) in Bithynia, which is now the area immediately east of Istanbul, and was ruled by his friend King Prusias I. The Romans were unwilling to let Hannibal be at peace and urged Prusias to have him extradited to Rome and rather than succumb to the Romans, Hannibal poisoned himself and was buried in what are now the grounds of the Scientific and Technological Research Council (TUBITAK).
Ataturk believed his tomb should be marked with a memorial which was placed in the 20th century and if you go along to TUBITAK with your identity card (kimlik) or passport the guards will allow you to enter to take a quick look.

Bosphorus Zoo

In Darica at Bayramoglu, which is close to Gebze, you will find this zoo (www.paradisezoo.com) set inside 200,000 square metres of grounds and unfortunately, like many other small zoos, it suffers from old cages. The gardens here are pleasant and it seems that the children prefer to be in the large playground area rather than viewing the animals.

Getting to Gezbe

Take the slow suburban train from Haydarpasa station alight at Gezbe and catch a minibus (dolmuş) to the town centre. To get to TUBITAK it is easier by taxi and in high summer the IETT run excursion buses to the zoo.
