Great Palace Mosaic Museum Istanbul

Great Palace Mosaic Museum Istanbul
During excavations in 1933 mosaics were discovered under the Arasta Bazaar , a restored street, now tourist shops, originally built in the 17th century to pay toward the upkeep of the Sultanahmet Mosque ( or Blue Mosque ). These mosaics were late identified as the floor of a peristyle courtyard (open court with porticos) that was part of the Great Palace ( Hagia Sophia ). On discovery of more mosaics in 1950s a museum was built enclosing the site, keeping some of the mosaics in place giving you an idea of their purpose and original scale. Many of the mosaics, dating from around the time of Justinian’s rebuilding of the Palace in the 16th century, portray animals in their natural settings and of domestic scenes.
