Things to do in Harbiye

Although Harbiye is not on the list of main tourist attractions in the city, it is well worth a visit as it is home to the Military Museum and the Janissary band (Mehter) who practice there regularly, and also has important venues that host classical music and pop concerts. Harbiye is also home to the Notre Dame de Sion High School.

Although the area is architecturally ordinary and has a busy road cutting through the middle of it, it was named after the Military Academy, the Mekteb-i Harbiye, built in 1841 and after a fire was rebuilt in 1853.  Until the 1930s most of the land on the southern side was a huge Armenian cemetery and in 1945 the land was nationalised and became the headquarters of Turkish Radio and Television (TRT).

Getting to Harbiye

You can walk or use the Metro from Taksim Square to Osmanbey or take a dolmus from the Naval Museum in Besiktas .
