Haskoy Istanbul

Haskoy Istanbul
Although Haskoy may not have much to offer in the way of beauty it does have two significant attractions; the old Jewish cemetery and the Museum of Industrial Heritage, the first of its kind in Turkey.

Places to Visit in Haskoy

Rahmi M Koc Museum

The Rahmi M. Koc Museum (www.rmk-museum.org.tr) has two separate sections that sit on either side of Haskoy Road Caddesi.
The first section is found inside what was once a factory that produced anchors (lengerhane). This elegantly domed building dates back to the time of Sultan Ahmed III (1703-1730) and was later used as a storage facility for industrial alcohol. The building had fallen into disuse when Rahmi M. Koc purchased it in 1991 to convert it into the museum you see today.
The second section is an open-air museum which was once a ship yard (tersane) that dated back to 1861 and where some of the early ferry boats were built. Rahmi Koc purchased this part in 1996 and it opened to the public in 2001.  There is also a temporary exhibition hall at the back of the Café du Levant.

Haskoy Jewish Cemetery

The Haskoy Jewish Cemetery dates back to 1582, it was once a flourishing Jewish burial place and today still contains over 20,000 graves that bear Hebrew and Turkish inscriptions. Unfortunately the graveyard is rather neglected and overgrown.

Getting to Haskoy

To get to Hasköy; take the ferry along the Golden Horn to the Hasköy landing point which is by far the most fun way to travel, or from Taksim take Bus No. 38T which will bring you to the museum or use the Metro from Sishane and then take a minibus (dolmuş).
