Hekimoglu Ali Pasa Mosque Istanbul

Hekimoglu Ali Pasa Mosque Istanbul
Hekimoglu Ali Pasa Mosque is on Ese Kapısı Street in Cerrahpasa Istanbul and although it sits among many other beautiful mosques, the elegant architecture and detailed decoration it has makes it stand out from the rest.  The design was the work of Ömer Ağa and it was built in 1734-1735 for Ali Paşa who was the son of the Grand Vizier and Court Surgeon (hekimoğlu) to Sultan Mahmud I.

The mosque has features blending both classical and new baroque styles, particularly in the entrance, with traditional stalactite carvings and rococo decoration in the arches.  The lovely garden is behind a wall with a sebil (water dispenser) built into it that has an exquisite metal grille and a very large and impressive arched gateway entrance with a small library built above it; the books inside are stored in raised wooden cupboard and can only be accessed by a ladder making it rather impractical.

From the room next door you get a great view of the mosque standing on its raised stone platform and is of a similar design to the older Cerrahpaşa Mosque.  The tiles on the walls were made at Tekfur Palace and some of which are made into an image of the Kaaba in Mecca.  Across the street is the 19th century Greek Orthodox Church of Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Altı Mermer Panagia). Head further north to Sırrı Paşa Street and you will find the 19th century Armenian Church of Surp Agop, where the sunken garden (çukurbostan) started life as the 5th century Cistern of St. Mocius, which was the largest of the four Byzantine reservoirs in Istanbul and took the name of the church that stood nearby.  This 25,000sqm is now a park and children’s sports facilities.
