Imperial Tombs Fatih Istanbul

Along Divan Yolu or Divan Road is the building designed in 1840 by the great Armenian architect Garabet Amira Balyan that contains the tombs of Sultan Mahmud II (1808-1838), Sultan Abdulaziz (1861-1876) and Sultan Abdulhamid II (1876-1909).
In the grounds are many late Ottoman marble tombstones, one of which belongs to sociologist and Turkish National writer Ziya Gokalp (1876-1924) and another to Sehzade Ertugrul Osman (1912-2009) who was brought from New York after his death and is known as “the Last Ottoman”.
Directly opposite is the Koprulu Library (Koprulu Kutuphanesi) which was the first independent library built during the Ottoman era in 1661 and commissioned by Mehmed Pasa (1578-1661) and his son Fazil Pasa (1635-1676) both of whom were powerful Grand Viziers.
