Grand Bazaar’s Toy Stores

The Grand Bazaar is one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets offering a taste of Turkish history to visitors and is a must see place when visiting Istanbul.  As it also has many toy shops it’s a great place for the kids to visit too.

A tour of the Bosphorus

The water is a great way to see the magic of Istanbul that is particularly enjoyable for not just adults but also children. There are short 2 hour trips available that depart from Eminonu and Ortakoy and day long tours are also available that leave from Eminonu and pass through Besiktas , Kanlica , Sariyer , Rumeli Fortress and Anatolian Fortress . The Moonlight Tours are also very popular as they are a great way to watch the beautiful sunsets over the water.

Miniaturk

Miniaturk is a place to come and experience a journey through history where visitors find models of many historical places and buildings located throughout Turkey and the former Ottoman Empire.  All the models here are on a 1/25 scale; 59 are from different sites in Istanbul, 51 from Anatolia and 12 are from outside of Turkey. Miniaturk offers visitors a fairy tale journey and for its smaller guests there are a castle and a Trojan horse that are actually play areas that the kids really can enjoy.

Rahmi Koc Museum

Rahmi Koc Museum sits on the northern shores of the Golden Horn in Haskoy and it extends over 27,000m2 and is divided into 3 sections.  What is particularly interesting for kids are the airplanes and classical cars located in the “Open Air Exhibition Space” and the museum also has  the historical “anchor house” (Lengerhane) and the historical Haskoy dockyards.

Sail to Buyukada

Buyukada means “big island” and this island can be reached by ferry in around 2 hours. This is one of Istanbul’s best places to experience natural beauty and offers fantastic views.  Buyukada provides wonderful walks and has horse rides and buggy rides available and the older children can rent bikes and cycle around the island.  Buyukada is one of the best places to come and spend the day enjoying a beautiful and natural environment.

Climb Galata Tower

One of Istanbul’s most famous landmarks, the Galata Tower , offers panoramic views across the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn .  Visitors can dine in the restaurant at the top of the tower whilst looking down on the city 70 metres below providing a special experience for both adults and children alike.

Hop on the Tramway on Istiklal Road

Head for the very lively   Istiklal Street in Beyoglu , open day and night, and is a great place to explore and shop in one of the many gift shops and arcades that are there and then  hop onto the nostalgic and historical tramway that leads from Taksim Square all the way to the end of Tunel Avenue.

Visit Turkazoo’s Sea Life

Turkazoo has marine life that comes from all over the world and in addition to its main tank has a variety of 43 other aquariums where children are able to see over 10,000 species of sea animals.  Kids love it at Turkazoo as they are offered an experience that feels as if they are actually swimming along with the fish.

Join a workshop at the Istanbul Modern 

The Istanbul Modern sits on the shoreline of the Bosphorus, stretches over 8,000 m2 and houses exhibition halls, a photography gallery, education and social programmes, a library, a cinema, a restaurant and gift shop. The Istanbul Modern hosts different art workshops everyday for children aged between 7 and 12 and offers them a great introduction to the world of art.

Play in Gulhane Park

Whilst visiting Topkapi Palace or Sultanahmet Mosque ( Blue Mosque ) ensure you make a stop at nearby Gulhane Park .  This huge green area offers fantastic views of the surrounding water and has special play areas for children that ensure all the family enjoy themselves whist here.
